Product Chaining

Product Chaining is coming in DAP v3.8 (hopefully within 2 weeks). We’ve just finished developing it, and are currently testing it.

See the initial updated version of the user interface below.

Here’s what it will allow you to do:

Any time someone gets access to PRODUCT A (either through direct signup, manual admin add, or purchase), then you can automatically give them access to PRODUCT B. And you can select whether they get PAID access to PRODUCT B or not.

Similarly, when someone is removed from PRODUCT A, you can also tell DAP to automatically remove their access to PRODUCT B.

Very powerful and useful feature.

Here’s a simple example:

User signs up as free user to PRODUCT A.

Later on, user buys PRODUCT B (which is paid version of PRODUCT A).

If you set up Product Chaining, then you can automatically remove them from PRODUCT A when they purchase PRODUCT B.  So when you send an email to all PRODUCT A users asking them to purchase access to PRODUCT B, then you won’t be sending emails to those who have already purchased PRODUCT B.

I like this Feature. I’m still thinking about a couple of different ways I might use this. Certainly good to put the teasers out there though.

Is it possible to chain two products together for actual content? For example, we have three levels of membership, a monthly, yearly and lifetime membership. All users get access to the exact same content, but for each post we have to go in to three products and update the records. Is it possible to chain them together so that when I add a page/post to product A it will also add that same page/post to product B and C at the same time?

Is this also a group or bundle feature? Meaning, I create two products: Product 1 and Product 2. Users can buyer Product 1 or Product 2 separately. Then I can create a bundle (Product 3) that sells Products 1 and 2 together at a discounted price.

Great product, its very frustrating when you continue to get prospect emails after you’ve become a customer.

This is will help eliminate this problem,

Bravo

This actually solves an issue for us with our tutorial products of Camtasia software where we have a training course for Camtasia version 6 AND one soon for Camtasia version 7. Our customers will obviously want to focus on the version they own but many will be upgrading over time.

Awesome!

Excellent feature. Makes automation almost, dare I say, smart.

Thanks for this feature!

#7 Dominic on 04.23.10 at 4:33 pm

Aha! Here it is, the feature we discussed via email some time ago! Nice.

3.8 ? I didn’t realise even 3.7 RC was out yet – didn’t get any email notification….

I love this feature. As a customer, it makes me feel like just another number when I continue to get emails pushing something I have already purchased.

As a marketer, I pay close attention to not doing things to my customer that I do not like done to me.

Your new feature will make this concern a moot point. There are plenty of other ways to remain top of mind.

Thanks for continuing to make a great product even better!

This is fantastic. I’ve been wanting this exact feature and thank you so much for addign it! Can’t wait to use this.

#11 Marc on 04.23.10 at 10:53 pm

Ravi,

this means that if in the user homepage there’s a link for free product A and i setup product chain, if the user buy product B in his homepage product A will be removed and he will find only product B? Amazing!

Product chain will work also for those who use 3 party autoresponders like aweber?

Wow, love that! DAP just keeps getting better and better. Thank you for all your brilliant work. You are hugely appreciated. Cheers, Thea

Great feature! Annoys me when I get emails asking me why I did not take action ..time is running out..etc etc…when in fact I bought the product!

#14 Bob Jenkins on 04.24.10 at 3:44 pm

This is great Veena. Been waiting for this for some time.

Marc – it won’t be automatic with Aweber, but you do have list automation in the settings at Aweber where if someone subscribes to list B they are removed from list A (assuming they used the same email). So as long as both your DAP products are set up to connect to Aweber lists, you’ll be set.

Like Lon, this chaining deal will help with my DAP sites, especially DiscoverDAP.com and IMSuccessLibrary.com.

Thanks for consistent improvements!

Bob

Ben,
The trigger for product chaining is ‘product add or remove’. What you are asking is ‘content-level trigger’ (content chaining), which is a great idea and hopefully will be part of a future DAP release. Not part of DAP 3.8.

Content chaining is too fluid to be implemented as static rule. It would probably be better implemented as a separate section on the products page itself, where you can say ‘also add to these products’.

#16 Veena Prashanth on 04.24.10 at 8:10 pm

Jeff,
Yes, technically it is possible to use product chaining as a bundle feature where you create product C as just a dummy product in DAP (no content dripping). Set up product chaining rules for C so anyone that buys product C (discount rate), they automatically get products A and B.

But you have to be a little careful while setting up email dripping for products A and B because anyone that signs up for product C (A+B) will receive the same email as the users with just product A or just product B. So the email content needs to make sense to both type of users.

Brilliant! So the scenerio below will be true:

A client signs up for a free ad-supported membership version on my site labeled Product A, in the back ground simultaneously they are registered for Product B (paid ad-free version of Product A), but does not have access to it yet.

Product B is only keeping pace with Product A so if a client is 3 weeks into A then they’ll be 3 weeks into B. The client doesn’t receive any content access or email drips from B.

When a client decides to upgrade to Product B they’ll be in the same chronological position in their membership only with the ads removed making the upgrade seamless and invisible to the client.

If the client downgrades it reverts them back to Product A at the same position they were in right before the cancel.

#20 Veena Prashanth on 04.25.10 at 7:23 pm

Fern,
It’s a good concept but not something we are supporting because this will result in a scenario where free customers that upgrade after say 4 months have access to ALL the content on day 1 of their upgrade while other paid users would have paid for 4 months to have access to the same content. It will not be a fair deal for the paid customers who have been paying monthly for all those months.

The access start of the chained products will be the date they upgrade and will not (and ideally should not) match the access start date of the product they currently have.

#21 Lee Jackson on 04.27.10 at 12:49 am

I love the concept of add and remove. I for one hate it when after I purchase a product and still receive promotional material for the same product as if I never made the purchase.

This certainly will be great for my customers. Thanks for the great upgrade keep up the great work.

How many levels of product chaining? looks like one level deep, right?

#25 Veena Prashanth on 05.03.10 at 7:28 pm

Right. It’s one level deep.

Otherwise it can get very complex and hard to troubleshoot.

#26 Ryan Bruss on 05.03.10 at 8:48 pm

Is it possible w/ this to create a product that is a 1 year membership (Product: Year 1)…the customer is dripped content for 1 year…and then when this period is over they are automatically signed-up for another 1 year membership (Product: Year 2)? I have been hoping for a feature like this so instead of customers signing-up for a limitless membership they sign up for an automatically renewed 1 year package of lessons. New customers can then choose what year to start at and I have more control over the lessons and a defined end to the membership (whatever year I stop creating lessons).

#27 Veena Prashanth on 05.04.10 at 11:57 am

Ryan,
We are considering adding a ‘product chaining effective date’ that will allow you to specify exactly when you want the specific product chaining rule to take effect. By default, it will be set to current date.

If it’s a paid product, then the subscription payment notification will always come in referencing the old product name. It cannot be automatically transferred or Applied-To the new product every year.
